Sourcing Solar Mounting Brackets From China: The Cheap Part That Ruins the Whole Array

Ask ten buyers what they spend their time on when they source a solar project from China and nine will say panels, inverters or batteries. The mounting system gets fifteen minutes at the end of a long call, usually with the words "and also, can you quote the brackets". That fifteen minutes is where projects die.

I have watched a 200 kW rooftop array sit half-installed for three weeks because the rail brackets arrived with 60-micron galvanizing instead of the 80-micron that was specified, and the installer refused to sign off on anything sitting above a coastal building. Nobody caught it because the purchase order said "hot-dip galvanized, marine grade", which is not a specification. It is a wish.

Start with the load, not the price

Racking is an engineering product and the real variables are wind and snow. If you cannot tell your supplier the wind speed your site has to survive, you are going to get whatever they built last time. A 40 m/s site and a 24 m/s site in the same province do not use the same rail gauge, the same span between posts, or the same fastener count.

Most serious Chinese racking factories will run a load calculation for you, and the reputable ones will give you a stamped report. Ask for it before you ask for a price. The moment you send a drawing with wind load and snow load on it, the quotes you get back stop being random numbers and start being comparable.

The corrosion question nobody asks

Hot-dip galvanized per ASTM A123 or ISO 1461 is the standard you want on steel racking, and the number that matters is the coating weight, usually quoted in g/m², or coating thickness in microns. What you will typically get quoted by default is pre-galvanized (also written GI) sheet metal, which has a thin zinc layer and performs fine inland and badly anywhere near salt.

  • Ask for the coating spec in g/m² or µm, in writing, on the PO.
  • Ask for the mill certificate for the steel, not just the racking.
  • For coastal or high-humidity sites, price aluminium rails or upgraded coating before you commit.
  • Ask what happens to cut edges and drilled holes. Bare steel at a cut edge is where rust starts, and it is the first thing a good factory addresses and a cheap one does not.

There is a related trap with the aluminium options. "6005-T5" and "6063-T5" are not the same extrusion, and you will occasionally be quoted 6063 at 6005 prices with a straight face. If your racking supplier cannot tell you the alloy and the temper without checking, that is your answer.

Bolts, clips and the small parts that got left out

Here is a pattern I see constantly. The rails are fine. The brackets are fine. Then a container arrives with no mid-clamps, or with clamps sized for a 30 mm panel frame when your modules are 35 mm, or with stainless bolts of a grade that goes furry in a season. Small hardware is where a factory can shave real money without you noticing, because at the quotation stage everyone is looking at the big numbers.

Put the fasteners in the quote. Specify the stainless grade — 304 is the baseline outdoors, 316 if you are within sight of the sea. Specify torque values and ask for the clamping profile in the drawing. If your supplier cannot produce a drawing showing how a clamp sits on your exact panel thickness, they have not thought about it either.

What good racking sourcing looks like in practice

The buyers who do this well run it in a fixed order. Get the site loads first. Send a drawing. Get a load report and a quote in the same document. Ask for the coating and fastener spec on the PO. Require a pre-shipment sample of the actual bracket and clamp, not a photo. Then inspect the coating thickness on a few random pieces with a gauge before the container leaves.

None of that is exotic. It is just attention, applied to the part of the project that everyone treats as an afterthought. The panels and inverters will be fine. They almost always are. It is the thing holding them down that decides whether the array is still standing in five years.
