Sourcing Outdoor and Camping Gear From China: Waterproof Ratings, Coatings and the Numbers That Mean Nothing

Camping gear is one of the most spec-driven categories in e-commerce, which makes it one of the easiest to fake. A listing that says "3000 mm waterproof" and another that says "5000 mm waterproof" look like a quality difference to a customer. To a buyer who has actually stood in a tent factory, they may be the same fabric with two different labels.

The industry standard for tent waterproofing is the hydrostatic head test, usually measured in millimetres of water column. Anything around 1500 mm keeps out light rain. 3000 mm handles proper weather. 5000 mm and up is expedition territory. The number is real, testable, and reported on the mill's spec sheet for the fabric — the question is whether the fabric in your sample is the fabric in the order.

Where the coating story falls apart

Tent fabric is usually nylon or polyester with a polyurethane (PU) or silicone coating on the inside, plus a durable water repellent (DWR) finish on the outside. Two things go wrong most often.

The first is coating weight. PU coating is quoted in g/m², and cheaper factories hit a headline hydrostatic number with a thin coat that abrades away after a season of packing and unpacking. Ask for coating weight, not just the head figure.

The second is the DWR finish. Older DWR chemistry based on PFCs is being pushed out of many markets for environmental reasons, and the replacement finishes behave differently — they often need a wash-and-tumble-dry cycle to reactivate the water beading. If you are shipping into the EU or a market with PFAS restrictions, ask your supplier which DWR chemistry they are using and get it in writing. This is a compliance question as much as a performance one.

Seams, zippers and the tests that matter

Fabric is only part of it. A tent with a 5000 mm fabric and bad seam sealing leaks at the seams, because the needle holes are the weak point. Seam tape width, whether taping is done on the inside or the bias, and whether the taped seams are tested, all matter more than the headline number.

  • Ask whether the factory seals seams with tape or with a liquid seam sealer, and get a photo of the actual seam on your sample.
  • Check zipper brand and type. YKK is the reference point and worth the premium on a product where a failed zipper ends the customer relationship. Cheap unbranded zippers on a mid-price tent are a warning sign.
  • Ask about UV resistance if the product is meant for year-round outdoor use. Coating and fabric both degrade, and this is rarely tested by small factories.
  • Get a pole spec. Aluminium pole alloy and wall thickness determine whether the tent survives wind, and this is another place buyers get quoted a number that is never verified.

Sleeping bags: the fill number that hides everything

Sleeping bag temperature ratings are self-declared in most of the world, and the same bag can honestly be sold as a "0°C bag" or a "comfort 8°C bag" depending on which number the seller chooses to quote. The real variables are fill type, fill power and fill weight.

Down is graded by fill power — roughly, how much volume an ounce of down lofts. 550 is ordinary, 700 is good, 800 and above is premium. The number is testable and good factories will have test reports. The trap is down-to-feather ratio and the actual fill weight in grams, which is where a "700 fill power" claim can sit on a bag with almost no down in it. Ask for the fill weight in grams per size, and ask for a test report on the fill.

Synthetic fills are less glamorous but easier to verify, and for a lot of mass-market camping products they are the right choice. If your supplier pushes you toward down for a price point where down does not make sense, they are selling you a story.

A working approach

Pick one or two spec numbers per product and insist on them in the contract. For tents, make it coating weight and seam taping. For bags, fill weight and fill type. For packs, fabric denier and whether the base is a heavier gauge than the body. Then test the sample against those numbers, and hold the production to the sample.

The category rewards buyers who care about the unglamorous middle of the product — the coating on the inside, the tape over the seam, the zipper pull. Customers compare the numbers on the box. The numbers on the box are the easiest thing in the world to print.
