Chaozhou Sanitary Ware Industrial Cluster
The Chaozhou Sanitary Ware Cluster: A Buyer's Map of the Region
This is a cluster profile rather than a company profile. There is no single website to check, because the "supplier" here is a district with several hundred factories in it. What follows is how to think about sourcing from Chaozhou as a region, what it is genuinely good at, and where the risk sits.
Why the Cluster Matters
Chaozhou in eastern Guangdong is one of China's two dominant sanitary ceramic regions, alongside Foshan. According to figures published by the Chaozhou municipal government and Chaozhou Daily in 2026, the city had 496 ceramics enterprises above designated size in 2025 with total industrial output of about 70 billion RMB, roughly a third of the city's industrial output. Sanitary ware production accounts for around 40% of national output, and smart toilet production was reported at 5.6 million units, more than 30% of the national total.
Those figures include tiles, domestic ware and craft ceramics, not only sanitary ware, and government statistics for a cluster should always be treated as directional. Directionally, though, the message is clear: this is not a niche supplier town, it is an industrial base with depth in slip, glaze, moulds, kilns and the hardware that surrounds the ceramics.
Geography: Where the Factories Actually Are
Sanitary ware in Chaozhou concentrates in Chao'an District, particularly the Fengtang, Guxiang and Dengtang areas, with a secondary band in the Xiangqiao district and along the route toward Shantou. A practical visit plan keeps you inside a 30 to 40 minute driving radius, but on Chaozhou's roads that still means two or three factories per day if you want to see more than the showroom.
Around the ceramic factories sits the layer that makes a cluster different from a random factory in a random province:
- Glaze and frit producers serving many plants in the same district, which explains why glaze quality improvements and glaze faults both spread quickly across suppliers
- Sanitary-ware mould makers, a specialty trade in its own right
- Seat, hinge, flush valve and cistern mechanism suppliers
- Kiln builders, refractory suppliers and maintenance services
- Carton and foam packaging, which matters more than most buyers expect because ceramics are damaged in transit as often as they are fired badly
What the Cluster Is Good At
Standard sanitary ware at volume, with fast turnaround on the boring changes. If you need a hinge swap, a different packing insert, a logo on the cistern, or a new seat colour, the short supply radius makes it fast. That responsiveness is the cluster's real advantage, and it is hard to replicate with a single distant factory.
It is also strong on OEM for retail and mid-market labels. There is a long history of making for export brands here, and the factories are used to buyer specifications, third-party inspection and the paperwork that goes with it.
It is weaker on genuinely designed product, on brand-level finishing, and on complex compliance programmes. If your product needs a distinctive design language, deep technical documentation, or a certification path that requires the manufacturer to own the regulatory process rather than hand you a folder, this cluster will find that harder than a larger Foshan or international-facing supplier.
Risk Profile
The trader problem. A large share of businesses presenting as "Chaozhou sanitary ware manufacturers" are trading companies with a showroom and a small fitting and packing operation. Many are competent. But you need to know which one you have, because it changes who is accountable for a firing defect and what you can negotiate.
Kiln capacity is not infinite. Around Chinese New Year and the spring building season, kiln slots are booked out. A project order landing in that window waits, and restarting kilns after the holiday produces a yield dip for weeks. Plan the buffer into the schedule rather than discovering it.
Consistency across batches. White is not one colour, and glaze batches differ. A single-batch reservation at deposit, plus a retained master sample, is the only control that works.
Packing. The cluster's cartons are usually adequate for a container and often inadequate for a building site. Inspect the drop test and the loading pattern, not just the product.
Key Facts
- Region: Chaozhou, eastern Guangdong, adjacent to Shantou and Jieyang
- Core area for sanitary ware: Chao'an District (Fengtang, Guxiang, Dengtang)
- Scale: 496 ceramics enterprises above designated size (2025), about 70 billion RMB output
- National share: around 40% of China's sanitary ware output (municipal reporting)
- Access: Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport, or high-speed rail to Chaoshan station
- Main products: toilets, basins, pedestals, cisterns, seats; tiles and craft ceramics alongside
- Best fit: OEM volume programmes, project ceramics, retail house brands
- Weak fit: strongly designed or brand-critical products requiring full regulatory ownership
- Timing caution: avoid sampling in the two to three weeks after Chinese New Year
Directory and Verification
There is no official cluster website that lists verified factories, and I would be cautious of any directory that claims to be one. For individual suppliers, start with our supplier directory entries and verify each one against its own site and its business licence.
For cluster-level information, the Chaozhou municipal government site (chaozhou.gov.cn) publishes industry policy documents and statistics, and Chaozhou Daily (chaozhoudaily.com) carries local industry reporting. Both are Chinese-language, and useful mainly as a sanity check on the numbers a supplier quotes you about the region.
