Sourcing Door Handles and Architectural Hardware From China: Finishes That Fool You
Architectural hardware is one of those categories that looks easy until you have a whole hotel's worth of handles on a site and half of them have started to pit after a year of coastal air. The supplier says the finish is brushed nickel. So was the other supplier's, and those are fine. The difference is not in the words, it is in the layers underneath them.
Door handles, pull handles, hinges, and the rest of the architectural range are a genuinely large Chinese export category, concentrated around the Guangdong hardware belt and in Zhejiang. It is also a category where the finish spec is routinely fuzzy, and fuzzy specs always resolve in the factory's favour.
Base Material First
Before you talk about finish at all, pin the base material. The common options are solid brass, zinc alloy (zamak) die casting, stainless steel, and aluminium. Each behaves differently and each has a different price band.
Solid brass is the premium choice for a reason: it machines cleanly, it takes a plating well, and it does not corrode in the way zinc does. It is also the most expensive, and it is heavy. Zinc alloy is the volume material, cheap to cast into complex shapes, but it is softer and its corrosion resistance depends almost entirely on how good the plating on top of it is. Stainless steel, usually 304 or 316, is the go-to for exterior and coastal applications because the corrosion resistance is in the metal, not just the coating.
The practical rule: for interior dry spaces, good plated zinc alloy is fine and saves money. For exterior doors, coastal projects, or anywhere humid, specify 304 or 316 stainless steel, or solid brass. Do not put plated zinc outdoors and expect a warranty claim to go the way you want.
Reading the Finish Label Honestly
"Brushed nickel," "satin chrome," "antique brass," "PVD", these are finish descriptions, not standards. What matters is the plating stack: how many microns of what metal, over what, and whether there is a clear topcoat.
Chrome and nickel plating thickness is expressed in microns (µm). A decent decorative nickel-chrome finish is typically several microns of copper, several of nickel, and a thin flash of chrome on top. When a factory shaves the nickel layer down, the finish looks fine at delivery and fails within a year in a humid bathroom. Ask for the plating thickness spec in microns, in writing. If they cannot state it, they do not control it.
PVD (physical vapour deposition) finishes are genuinely more durable (the coating is harder and more scratch- and corrosion-resistant than electroplating) and they are increasingly common in mid-to-premium hardware. If a supplier claims PVD, ask what colour and what base material, because PVD over a poor substrate still has a weak point.
"Antique" and "brushed" finishes are often deliberately inconsistent, and that is a real problem at scale. Hand-applied antique finishes vary from batch to batch, and a single project can end up with two visibly different sets of handles. If uniformity matters, ask to see three units from different production batches side by side before you commit.
The Test That Settles It
Salt spray testing is the standard way to compare finishes. Neutral salt spray (NSS) is run for a set number of hours and then the parts are inspected for corrosion. Speak in hours: a finish that survives 24 hours is entry level, 96 hours is decent for interior, and 240 hours and up is what you want for exterior or marine exposure. Ask your supplier for the salt spray hours their finish holds, and ask for the test report. If they cannot produce one, treat the claim as unverified.
If you are not paying for a lab, the cheap field version is to take two samples, one from each candidate supplier, and leave them outside in the weather for a month, ideally somewhere damp. It is crude but it separates the honest plated parts from the ones that only look the part. I have used this for years and it has never once led me wrong.
Consistency Across a Project
Architectural hardware is bought once and lived with for decades, so colour consistency matters more here than in almost any other category. When you place a project order, ask the factory to quote it as one production run rather than pulling from existing stock, and ask them to hold the finish recipe for reorders. Otherwise the handles you add six months later will not quite match the ones already installed, and the client will notice on the day they hand over the building.
Also fix the small things in the spec: the screw and fixing material (stainless screws, always, or the plating will be the only part that survives), the spindle size, the door thickness range, and the backset. These are the details that cause site-level delays and callback visits, and they cost you nothing to write down now.
Buying Without Getting Burned
Start with samples from three suppliers, specify base material and plating in microns and salt spray hours, and test before you commit to volume. There are excellent, well-run hardware factories in Guangdong and Zhejiang that will meet a real spec. The trouble is always where the spec stayed vague, because a vague spec is an invitation to build down to the price. Write it down, test the samples, and the category stops being a gamble.
