Sourcing Bathroom Sanitaryware from China: What Actually Matters

Bathroom sanitaryware looks like the easiest category in China to source, and that is exactly why so many first orders go wrong. A toilet is a heavy, bulky, low-value-density product where the shipping cost per unit can rival the factory cost, and a small error in flush design or certification turns a profitable order into a warehouse full of unsellable ceramics.

I have watched importers succeed and fail in this category on the same variables. Here is what separates the two.

Vitreous china is not a commodity

Almost every toilet and basin from China is described as "vitreous china," which tells you almost nothing. What matters is firing temperature and density. Properly vitrified ceramic fires around 1200°C and comes out with a water absorption rate below 0.5 percent. A lot of cheap production sits closer to 1 percent. The practical difference shows up two years later as crazing — fine cracks in the glaze — and in units that stain permanently because the surface is slightly porous.

You can ask for the water absorption test result (usually run to the GB standard, or to your market's equivalent). If the factory cannot produce it, that is your answer. I would also push for a denser wall section on basins; thin walls feel flimsy and chip at the rim, which is the first thing a customer notices unpacking.

Flush performance is the whole product

A toilet that looks perfect in photographs can be a return machine if the flush is weak. Most Western markets regulate this. In the US, the current standard is 1.28 gallons per flush (gpf) for most residential models, with some jurisdictions requiring 1.0 gpf. The EU works off EN 997, which grades flush performance and requires the product to clear the test media and leave the bowl clean.

Ask for a MaP test if you are selling in North America. MaP (Maximum Performance) testing reports how many grams of solid media a toilet clears in a single flush. A score in the 500-gram range is decent; top performers clear 1000 grams. Factories that publish their MaP scores are usually the ones who care about the engineering.

Be skeptical of trapway diameter claims. A bigger trapway helps, but only if the siphon jet and rim wash are designed around it. I have seen 2.5-inch trapways with terrible flush because the jet was undersized. Ask for video of the flush, not a spec sheet.

Water efficiency rules differ more than buyers expect

This is where a lot of orders get stuck at customs or, worse, on retail shelves. The US has WaterSense labeling through the EPA for toilets, faucets and showerheads. Canada runs a similar program. The EU does not have a single mandatory water label, but member states differ, and countries like Australia have their own WELS scheme with a star rating that your packaging must carry.

The trap: the same physical toilet can be sold in the US as a compliant 1.28 gpf model and in another market with a different flush valve. If you are buying one SKU for multiple markets, confirm the flush volume and whether the model is registered in each market. Registration and certification are usually paid for by whoever is the importer of record, so factor that into your landed cost.

Faucets and brass: watch the lead

Bathroom faucets and mixers are mostly brass, and the lead content is regulated hard in the US and getting stricter elsewhere. The US Safe Drinking Water Act sets a weighted average lead content of 0.25 percent maximum for wetted surfaces. The old "lead-free" brass formulations with up to 8 percent lead are not acceptable for potable water applications in the US market.

Ask for the material test report from an accredited lab on the exact alloy the factory uses for production, not a sample. Cheap brass from remelted scrap can drift toward the limit even if the sample passed. If the price is suspiciously low for a solid brass faucet, the answer is usually a thinner wall, a lighter cartridge or lower-grade alloy.

Ceramics break in transit

Shipping toilets and basins is a packaging problem as much as a sourcing problem. A container of ceramics flexes, shifts and settles. Breakage rates on poorly packed loads of 5 to 10 percent are not unusual; well-run factories hold it under 1 or 2 percent. Insist on double-wall corrugated cartons, corner protection on basins, and internal bracing between units.

Get the packaging spec in writing and, on your first order, ask for photos of the packed pallet before the container closes. I have also had better luck with factories that fit fewer units per carton and accept the higher carton cost — it pays for itself versus a breakage claim that takes six months to settle.

The certification question that catches people out

Beyond water efficiency, look at what your specific channel requires. Selling through US plumbing channels often expects UPC/cUPC listing, which is a certification on the finished product from a recognized listing agency. EU sales require CE marking where applicable and compliance with the construction products framing for certain fixtures. Retailers may ask for their own testing on top.

Do not accept "we have certificate" as an answer. Ask which product, which model number, which listing agency, and whether the certificate covers the exact factory making your goods. Certificates travel with products and factories, not brands, and a factory change invalidates them.

What I would do on a first order

Pick one or two hero SKUs, not a full catalog. Get pre-production samples and live with them for a month — flush them, clean them, look for crazing. Arrange third-party inspection before shipment and specifically ask the inspector to check glaze coverage inside the bowl and under the rim, where visual QC is weakest. Then place a modest first order and treat the second order as your real test.

Sanitaryware is a category where the cheap order is rarely the cheap outcome. A factory that obsesses over flush engineering and fires its ceramic properly will cost a little more per unit and save you an enormous amount in returns, replacements and reputation.
