Electronics are where importers make the most money — and lose it fastest. A shipment of phones, chargers, power banks, or lighting that fails certification can be seized at customs, blocked from sale, or recalled later at devastating cost. The good news: most of this is preventable with a little discipline upstream. Here's the field guide to importing electronics from China without getting stuck at the border.
Why electronics get held at customs
Customs and market regulators don't inspect products the way a buyer would. They check compliance evidence: do you have the right certificates, markings, and documentation for this product in this market? Electronics are high-risk because they can be dangerous (fire, shock) and interfere with networks (wireless). The usual failure points:
- No certificate for the specific model / SKU being shipped.
- The claimed certificate doesn't match the destination country's requirements.
- Missing required markings (CE logo, FCC ID, WEEE symbol, voltage/labeling) on the product or packaging.
- Batteries or wireless modules that need separate approvals the supplier hasn't arranged.
- Wrong electrical plug, voltage, or frequency for your market.
The certifications that matter, by market
Certification is country-specific, and it's the single thing importers get wrong most often. A broad map:
- European Union — CE marking for most electronics (LVD, EMC, RoHS, WEEE). Wireless products need RED (Radio Equipment Directive) and often additional standards. Batteries fall under the EU battery regulations.
- United States — FCC for anything that emits radio frequencies (including chips in smart devices), UL/ETL listing for many mains-powered products, and energy-efficiency rules (e.g., DOE/Energy Star depending on category).
- United Kingdom — UKCA designation (post-Brexit) now applies for the British market, with its own conformity requirements.
- Other key markets — PSE/voluntary (Japan), KC (South Korea), SAA/RCM (Australia/NZ), CCC (China domestic). If you export to multiple markets, you need each one's certification — a CE certificate alone doesn't cover the US.
