Sourcing Shower Heads and Faucets From China: Where the Brass Actually Comes From
I have bought a lot of faucets out of China over the years, and I will tell you the truth up front: this is one of those categories where the sample is almost never the problem. The sample is beautiful. The container that shows up six months later is where the arguments start.
Here is what I have learned about sourcing shower heads, kitchen faucets and basin mixers out of China without getting burned.
The brass question nobody explains properly
Most Chinese faucet factories quote you by "brass" or "zinc alloy". Those are not the same thing, and the difference is not cosmetic. Brass is copper plus zinc, usually with a bit of lead because lead makes it machining-friendly. Zinc alloy is exactly what it sounds like and it is fine for a decorative handle, not for a body that holds water under pressure for a decade.
What you actually care about is the lead content of the wetted surface. The US market cares about NSF/ANSI 61 and the weighted average lead content standard (0.25% max for the wetted surface). Europe cares about the Drinking Water Directive and increasingly about nickel release. A factory can tell you "no lead" all day and still hand you a casting with lead in it if they bought ingots from the wrong trader.
Ask for the copper percentage, not just the word brass. HPb59-1 is a common Chinese brass grade — around 59% copper. If a supplier cannot tell you the grade number, they are a trader, not a factory, nine times out of ten.
Cartridges are where your returns come from
The cartridge is the moving part inside the handle. A cheap ceramic cartridge costs the factory maybe 60 cents. A decent one from a name brand like Sedal (which is actually Spanish but has huge capacity in China) costs a few dollars. The failure mode is always the same: drip drip drip after 8 to 14 months, right at the end of your warranty window.
If you are selling in the US or EU, insist on a cartridge with a stated cycle rating — 500,000 cycles is a common claim for a mid-tier unit. Get it in writing on the spec sheet, because when a customer posts a video of the drip, that spec sheet is your defense.
Aerators and flow rates
California and a growing number of states cap kitchen faucets at 1.8 gallons per minute, bathroom at 1.5 or lower. If you ship a 2.2 GPM faucet into a US warehouse you are going to get delisted by the marketplace, not because it is illegal, but because the listing violates the platform's own water efficiency rules.
The fix is boring and cheap: order the aerator separately and match it to the destination. Do not let the factory ship one global SKU with a weedy flow rate that fails in half your markets.
The finish is a supply chain all by itself
Chrome, brushed nickel, matte black, PVD gold. Matte black is the one that bites people. It is a paint or a PVD process, and cheap matte black chips at the aerator collar within a year of hard water. If you must sell matte black, ask what the coating thickness is and ask for a salt spray test result — 24 hours is entry level, 96 hours is what you want.
PVD finishes (the ones that look like real gold or gunmetal) are a different factory again in many cases — the plater is a subcontractor, not the assembler. That is a hidden second supply chain and a hidden second quality risk.
Practical numbers from my own orders
- A basic single-handle basin mixer, decent brass, brand-name cartridge: roughly 8 to 14 USD FOB at 1,000 pieces.
- The same body in zinc alloy: 3 to 5 USD. It will feel heavy and look fine and it will not survive.
- A 3-function hand shower head with a decent ABS body: 2 to 4 USD at volume.
- Brushed nickel plating upgrade: adds 1 to 3 USD depending on the surface area.
MOQ is usually 500 to 1,000 pieces per finish per model. Below that you are paying a tooling or setup surcharge, and it is almost never worth it.
What I actually ask for before paying a deposit
- A material declaration naming the brass grade, not the word "brass".
- Cartridge brand and cycle rating in writing.
- Salt spray test report for whatever finish I am buying.
- A flow rate matched to the specific destination market.
- One production-unit sample pulled from an existing production run, not a hand-built golden sample.
That last point matters more than the rest combined. Handmade samples are theater. A unit pulled off the line during a real production run tells you what you are actually going to receive.
Get these five things and this category is genuinely profitable. Skip them and you will spend your margin on replacements and your reputation on drip complaints.
