Sourcing Packaging Materials From China: Grammage, Drop Tests and the Colour You Will Regret
Packaging is the part of the product nobody budgets for properly and everybody argues about later. I have watched a buyer save four cents a box on corrugated and then lose an entire shipment to crushed corners that Amazon refused to receive. Packaging is the last line between your product and a returns claim, so it is worth more attention than the price per unit suggests.
Corrugated is measured in a few numbers
The first thing to understand is that "cardboard box" tells you almost nothing. Corrugated board has a flute profile and a grammage, and both matter.
- The flute — A, B, C, E, F — sets the thickness and the cushioning. B-flute is thin and good for printed retail boxes. C-flute is the workhorse for shipping cartons. A-flute is thickest and best for fragile heavy items. E and F flute are for fine retail packaging.
- Grammage is the paper weight in grams per square metre. A common export carton liner runs around 150 to 200 gsm on the outer, with a heavier test liner if the box will stack.
- The burst strength and the edge crush test (ECT) are the numbers that predict stacking performance. If your product ships in a pallet column, ask for the ECT, not the "quality grade".
Single-wall versus double-wall is the first real decision. A double-wall carton costs more but survives a five-high pallet stack in a humid container, which single-wall often does not. If you ship by sea, humidity alone will soften a cheap box over thirty days.
The drop test nobody wants to pay for
The standard reference is ISTA, and the specific test series depends on your shipping method. ISTA 1A is the basic packaged-product drop test; 3A adds a simulated distribution cycle. Amazon sellers care about ISTA-6 for some categories and about the frustration-free packaging spec for others.
You do not have to run the full lab test on every order. For a first order, ask the factory to do a corner drop from the height your courier uses, then a compression test with the actual stacking weight, and send you the video. It costs almost nothing and it catches the obvious failures — a box that splits at the seam, or one that crumples under two boxes of load.
Printing: where the regrets live
Branded boxes are printed either flexographically or by litho lamination. Flexo is cheaper and fine for one or two colours and simple logos. Litho lamination gives you photo-quality graphics and is what most consumer brands use.
The classic mistake is colour. Pantone colours on brown kraft board come out duller and warmer than on white board. If your brand colour is a bright blue or a vivid red, print on a white-lined board, or accept that the colour will shift, or both. Always approve a physical printed sample, never a screen proof, and approve it under daylight, not office lighting.
Also decide the coating. A glossy varnish looks rich and scratches in transit. A matte finish hides scuffs but shows fingerprints. For e-commerce parcels that get handled a lot, a matte with a spot varnish on the logo is the usual compromise.
What to lock down in the PO
I put these on the purchase order, in writing, every time: exact flute and wall construction, liner grammage, outer dimensions with tolerances of plus or minus a couple of millimetres, the print method and Pantone references, the coating, the packing of the flat boxes themselves, and the required ISTA or in-house test. If FSC certification matters for your market, ask for the chain-of-custody certificate number and check it, because "FSC-ready" is not FSC.
None of this is glamorous. All of it decides whether your customer opens a clean product or files a damage claim, and the cost difference between getting it right and getting it wrong is usually a few cents a box.
