Sourcing EV Charging Equipment from China: Cables, Connectors and the Certification Trap
EV charging gear is a category that punishes optimism. The product photos look like a cable with a plug on each end, the quote is reasonable, and then you hit the wall that stops most first orders: the connector standard and the certification are different for every market, and a Chinese factory will happily build you the wrong one if you do not specify.
Connector standards come first
The charging connector is regional and it is not interchangeable. North America runs on J1772 for AC and CCS1 or NACS for DC. Europe uses Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC. China uses GB/T, which does not work in Western markets and is a trap for buyers who source locally without checking. Japan has CHAdeMO for DC.
If you are selling in the US and your factory sends you a GB/T cable, the entire shipment is unsellable. Specify the connector standard in writing on the PO, with the exact plug type, and ask for a photo of the actual connector on the production unit, not the catalog render. I have watched a buyer receive 2,000 Type 2 cables for a US launch because the order confirmation just said "EV cable".
Certification is the make-or-break step
For the US, the relevant marks are UL 2594 and UL 2251 (the latter for the connector itself), plus the EV charging cable standards under UL 62 for the cord. For Europe, look for CE with the right directives, and specifically the EN 61851 series for charging systems. IEC 62196 covers the connectors internationally.
Here is the part that catches people: a factory can hold a certificate for the cable component and not for the assembled charging station. Those are different products with different testing. Ask which specific product the certificate covers, and match the model number on the certificate to the model number you are buying. This is the single most common failure I see in EV charging sourcing.
Also ask whether the certificate is issued by a nationally recognized testing lab (NRTL) for the US. A CE self-declaration with no test report is nearly worthless for a product that plugs into mains power and carries real liability.
Cables, current, and the numbers
Charging cable is sized by current carrying capacity and by temperature rise. A 32A cable and a 16A cable can look identical from the outside. Check the conductor cross-section, the insulation rating, and the temperature rise specification. A cable rated for 32A that runs hot at 32A is a fire risk, and cheap factories shave copper to hit price.
- AC Level 2 charging in the US commonly runs 32A or 40A, up to 48A for higher-end units.
- DC fast charging is a different product class entirely, with liquid-cooled cables at high power, and the certification and safety burden scales with it.
- Portable Level 1 chargers are the easiest entry point and the most competitive on price, so margins are thin.
Ask for the copper weight per meter if you are serious, and for a temperature-rise test report. Copper is the main cost driver in a charging cable, and it is the first thing cut when a factory wants to win on price.
Firmware and the smart features
Most modern chargers have a control board, and that board is where the software risk lives. Ask who owns the firmware, whether you get the source or just a binary, and what happens if the supplier disappears. A charger that depends on a cloud app you do not control is a product you do not really own.
If you want OCPP compatibility so your chargers integrate with common back-end systems, specify the OCPP version (1.6J or 2.0.1) up front. Retrofitting it later means a new board and re-certification.
Sample and test before you commit
Order a sample unit and actually load-test it at rated current for an extended period, not for a minute. Check temperature at the connector and along the cable. Verify the connector latch engages and releases cleanly, because a latch that sticks in the field generates returns. And test the ground fault protection, which is a safety requirement in most markets and a common source of cheap units failing their certification claims.
EV charging is a category where the certification and the connector standard decide whether you have a product at all. Sort those two out before price, and the rest of the sourcing gets much easier.
