Sourcing Cookware and Kitchenware From China: Non-Stick, Material and Compliance Notes
Cookware is one of those categories that looks simple from the outside and gets surprising the moment you drop below the surface. A frying pan is not just a frying pan once you start asking what the non-stick layer actually is, what the metal underneath is made of, and whether the whole thing will pass the food-contact rules in the country you are selling into. Get those questions answered early and the difference between a great product and a container of unsellable pans is usually just paperwork and a coating spec.
Guangdong province, and especially the area around Zhongshan, Foshan and Yangjiang, is where much of China's cookware manufacturing is concentrated, with Yangjiang having a long reputation for knives and metal kitchenware. There are serious factories there, and there are also small operations that will tell you what you want to hear about a coating. So your job is to separate the two with evidence, not vibes.
Know your non-stick options
Most non-stick cookware you have used is coated with a PTFE-based finish, which is what people usually mean when they say Teflon, though Teflon is a brand rather than the coating itself. It is genuinely effective and slippery. The complication in recent years is that the broader family of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, often shortened to PFAS, has come under heavy regulatory scrutiny, and some coatings are being reformulated or restricted in certain markets. If you are selling into the US or the EU, this is not a niche concern anymore. It is the single biggest compliance question in a non-stick order.
The useful thing to ask a supplier is not "is this Teflon free," because that phrasing is vague and increasingly meaningless. Ask instead whether the product has documentation showing it complies with the specific PFAS and food-contact rules that apply in your destination market, whether it carries a certificate from an accredited testing lab, and what the coating is based on. A supplier who can pull up a current test report is telling you something real. A supplier who says "everyone uses the same coating, no problem" is telling you they have not thought about it.
Material under the coating matters too
Non-stick is a coating on top of something, and that something changes the pan's behavior and its price. Aluminum is light and heats quickly and evenly, which is why so many affordable pans use it, but bare aluminum reacts with acidic foods, which is why coated pans are usually anodized first or finished with a non-stick layer. Stainless steel is heavier, more durable and workhorse for many kitchens, but it is a weaker conductor on its own, which is why good stainless pans build in an aluminum or copper core. Cast iron is heavy, holds heat beautifully, and for seasoned or enameled pieces has a totally different coating story than non-stick.
The practical point for a buyer is to specify both the base material and the coating in your purchase contract, and to confirm the physical weight of the finished piece. Weight is one of the fastest tells between a solid pan and a thin one, and it is also a freight and a duty input, so you want it nailed down anyway. Ask for the body material, the gauge or thickness, and whether the pan is suitable for the heat source you care about, induction being the one most often missed.
Check what the destination country wants
If you are shipping cookware anywhere, food-contact compliance is going to come up, and it is cheaper to handle it before you order than after a container lands. In the US, cookware falls under FDA food-contact rules, and depending on the importer and the retailer you may need to show a certificate or a letter of guarantee about the materials contacting food. In the EU, the framework is Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and the specific rules that follow for plastics, coatings and metals, and the documentation trail tends to be more demanding. The exact tests and certificates can vary by product, so the move is to tell your supplier up front which market you are selling into and ask them to quote the cost and lead time for the relevant testing.
Beyond food contact, keep an eye on packaging. A lot of cookware arrives in printed cartons, and if yours carries claims like "BPA free" or environmental language, you should make sure any claim on the carton is defensible, because consumer-protection agencies do not have to wait for a complaint. Keep the claims you print narrow and true.
Samples, magnetic testing and the first order
Cookware deserves a hands-on sample more than almost any other category, because so much of the quality lives in feel. A stainless pan should sit flat on the counter without rocking. A coated pan's surface should look consistent. If induction compatibility matters, a cheap magnet test can confirm the base is magnetic, but for serious volume you want the supplier to confirm the full induction construction rather than relying on a magnet that only tells part of the story. And if you are branding the cookware, ask whether the factory can bake your logo into the base or handle, which is common for private label, versus using a sticker that customers peel off at the first wash.
For the finished product, ask the same things you would for any import: what the moisture, weight and carton dimensions are for your freight quote, how the pieces are packed so they arrive without dents and scratches, and what happens on a claim if a percentage arrives damaged. Cookware travels heavy, so packing quality and the forwarder route matter more than you might expect.
The reason most good cookware sourcing feels straightforward is not luck. It is that the buyer checked the coating paperwork, confirmed the material and weight, and sent the factory the compliance requirement for the destination market before anyone cut a single piece of aluminum. Do those three things and you are most of the way to a product that sells again, not a one-time mistake sitting in a warehouse.
